huh-another thing about anime is that the anime popular in the US-mostly aimed at adult/young adult audiences is rejected by the mass of japanese people.
The average time slot is around 1 to 2am on TV. And only 1-2 channels broadcast anime-anime has sunk into subculture in Japan. thus the popularity of OAV's(waning). And its quite hard to become friends with an otaku-even in Akihabara(Tokyo's subculture market) its fairly hard to have a conversation with one. They are regarded as people that move-against society-a cardinal sin in Japan.
But if you go to any of the japanese anime cons you can see tons of people doing costume play-its really intersting, but increasingly the costumes come from video games, the more socially acceptable, not anime.

Yes. For an example of an adult/young adult anime that went poorly in Japan but REAL well here, see Hellsing. The japanese deamed it "to graphic and gorey" for their anime market. i find it funny that it is the same market that found Akira as not so 'gorey'...but, eh, whatever. *shrugs*

I've always said it and I'll say it again - all the good anime stays in Japan. America broadcasts the crap.
