Wasn't Thunderbirds an English show? I hope you're not thinking of the one w/ the marionettes, although I've read that the marionette version was the basis of Thunderbirds 2086. But I'm pretty sure 2086 was actually produced in Japan, since it did have storylines that involved death, decisions, pain and suffering and wasn't the usual mindless violence or fluff that comes from NA shows. And it had really good animation w/ well done designs for the chars and sleek looking vehicles.

There is a puppet version that is just called Thunderbirds, they had a crappy nintendo game for it.
I mean really bad.

It's very likely that Gerry Anderson, who created the series, either licensed the characters to a Japanese animation studio or or out-and-out financed it himself. Having seen Japanese-made Thunderbird kits over the years, an anime behind them would make sense.
