First I ever heard of this show was when it aired on the FoxKids network, but it was taken off the air after only 9 episodes aired.
Went to the video store, they have the FoxKids edition, but then I saw a completely different set....worse yet, there is supposed to be a third version, but under a completely different name.
So, which version do I want? Anyone have any info.?

So, which version do I want? Anyone have any info.? It was originally shown on FoxKids for quite a while (I taped all of the season.) but was taken of the air *Sobs* The videos will not be the same as shown on the FoxKids channel, as I bought the last DVD containing the last episode (which is one of my fave's as it was so lovely at the end.) however the format had changed, the ending music and starting music was changed and also my fave piece the reason I bought it had changed also. I recommend buying the videos or DVD's if you can find them because it's a great series and the end is well worth the wait! Plus have you heard about the film of Escaflowne? That is another completely different take on the Esca universe, having Hitomi being near suicidal and less enthusiastic from her tv role, and Van is again the reverse of his tv role, being more enthusiatic about protecting his county and getting revenge. Also the plot is changed slightly and some characters do not appear in the film. I haven't seen the film yet, but I expect it to be another masterpiece of Esca work. Also there is a manga version of Escaflowne, which is TOTALLY different from the tv series and the film, but again still very good to read. Hope that's useful? *Hugs*

Well, I haven't read Escaflowne manga, but I have seen both Escaflowne TV series and Escaflowne movie. I'll try to give some info about them, without giving any (or at least much) 'spoilers'.
Escaflowne TV sereis are more... mild, at least, comparing to Escaflowne movie. Don't get it wrong though, there are still some violence in there and some people are getting killed 'on the screen'. But not much. Van is less aggressive, and Hitomi is quite happy with her life.
On the contrast, Esaflowne movie is quite dark and violent. Van isn't especially protective, since he doesn't really have anything left to protect with his country lying in ruins, but he is very aggressive, vengeful and both ready and willing to kill; in fact, the Escaflowne movie begins with Van mercilessly slaughtering the crew of the entire air ship to lay his hands on Escaflowne, and at one point of the Escaflowne movie Van is quite willing to kill Hitomi. As about Hitomi, she is rather hopeless and seem to view her life as something meaningless. However, I don't remember exactly if Hitomi thinking about commiting suicide in the Escaflowne movie, as it has been a long time since I have seen the Escaflowne movie.
Personally, I think that both Escaflowne TV series and Escaflowne movie are quite good, even though neither of them is among my favorite anime. Since Escaflowne TV sereis and Escaflowne movie are very different, it is almost impossible to compare them to each other; Escaflowne TV series is mostly for fans of Romance/Action genre, while Escaflowne movie is mostly for fans of Angst/Action genre. However, I'll repeat myself, IMHO, both Escaflowne TV series and Escaflowne movie are quite good.
P.S.
I hope, that I haven't 'spoiled' the veiwing of either Escaflowne TV series or Escaflowne movie for anybody.
P.P.S.
Unfortunately, LWW, I have no idea about this mysterious 'third version', which you were talking about.
Edit: I have just corrected my mistake of misspelling Hitomi's name as "Hiromi".
