Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth by Bethesda Softworks and a developer called Headfirst is coming to the Xbox and PC. The game will take place in Innsmouth, where the protagonist, Jack Walters, must investigate the disappearances of several prominent citizens as well as reports of strange creatures seen at night.
The still shots that are currently available are rather nice looking, including that of a statue of Great Cthulhu himself.
One of the game play innovations is that you must keep track of both your health and your sanity, but without the traditional meter bar. Instead, you will find that you may not be able to jump as far or run as long because of the injuries you sustained fighting a Deep One. Sanity will be affected by stress caused by horrific encounters.
Bethesda gave us all Morrowind, so I've got high hopes for this one.

The "link" in question is the latest copy of Original Xbox Magazine, but here is a link from the Bethesda Softworks website. www.bethsoft.com/product_templates/product_shell.html?cthulhu_Overview.html

Holy Crap, i just might actually go out and get an X-box now Noooo!!!!!! Don't do it! It's a trap! Bill will own your soul! PS2 has great games as well, and it isn't a losing venture designed for the express purpose of taking money from sony. Well, to avoid becoming a complete spammer, I'll point out that the old pnp cthulu game chewed up PC faster than a meatgrinder in an electrical storm. I wonder if this game will do the same?

Losing venture? PS2 sales are down from last year by 36% and Game Cube is down by 22%. By contrast, Xbox sales are up by 6%
Don't worry, though. PS2 will be getting its own CoC title from the same company.

But Microsoft is losing money every time they sell an X-Box. $50, to be exact. So an increase in sales means they lose money. The only reason that Bill's doing this is because he's going for another f'ing monopoly. You want all the decent games to be on a console equivalent of windows? Sorry, this is kind of a raw spot for me...

True, it runs off Windows-based kernal, but it doesn't crash like a PC does because the hardware is what is termed "closed architecture" (versus the "open architecture" of PCs).
As to losing money on the hardware, that is more than made up for by the 5.6 attach rate (the average number of games bought for a console either at or immediately after purchase), which is higher than the other two systems. They're making that money back, trust me.
Personally, I like good games regardless of whose console they appear on. However, I can't afford to own all three and chose Xbox. I'm quite satisfied with my purchase choice.
As to the monopoly on the console market, what do you think Sony is trying to do? And now they're eyeballing the same monopoly Nintendo has with GBA. I don't see anybody crying foul about them.

Extra competition is healthy, to be sure. But Microsoft scares me because they have such a huge store of rescources that can potentially be brought to bear. Trust me, I don't have any real grudge against microsoft (I say I do, but I'm joking ). Sony is going in to the handheld market, and I'm glad, because it will create competition, but I would be most unhappy if they were putting ten billion dollars in to it and tripling the contract amounts for every game developer over what nintendo could offer. That's not competition, because, simply put, they are succeeding on the basis of previous success with a completely different product. It has nothing to do with the fact that their product or its advertising is in any way better.

Sony has considerable financial might of its own to throw behind their products if they need to. This was evident in the contracts that they gave to certain key software manufacturers to make sure certain games were exclusive to their system. They paid out an awful lot of money to make sure those games stayed off the Xbox for a long time (Grand Theft Auto III & Vice City), or didn't show up on Xbox at all in certain markets (Metal Gear Solid II: Substance isn't available to Japanese Xbox owners).

But they can do this because their product is successful- not because they sell a lot of stereos. They are doing it because its a good investment, and they have an established market. They didn't start out with the relatively high risk stuff, they got there once it was clearly established that they had a good product.
By the way, do you know a good site where I could see the actual numbers? I was under the impression that they were losing cash, even with all the game sales, but I'll bite my tounge if you can demonstrate otherwise...

Part of my figures come from the latest copy of OXM, if you want to pick that up. They did take a loss in the beginning with the hardware ($325 per unit to make a machine that sold for $299). If you need to, you can e-mail them directly at xboxmag@futurenetworkusa.com
Editor IC Mike Salmon: msalmon@futurenetworkusa.com
They are usually very good about answering questions like this.
