Just saw this movie the other day.
First off don't base your decision on whether or not to see it on Ashton Kutcher. He does a reasonably okay job of moving away from his cute dumb guy role from That 70s Show or Dude Where's My Car? This is not to say that he has serious, cute, smart guy down perfectly.
All in all a decent horror/ suspense movie. The movie didn't really keep me on the edge of my seat, but it was rather disturbing in its portrayal of the pedophile neighbor dad and his sociopath son.
If you're at all interested, you probably already know the basic plotline, but just to make sure you absolutely know what you're in for:
When the main character, whose adult version is played by Ashton Kutcher, is a child, he suffers blackouts at traumatic moments. It's worth noting that I found the technique they used for signalling a blackout to be somewhat jarring on the nerves. The therapy that is suggested is that this character should keep a journal to aid his memory.
As an adult, well a college student at least, he begins to recover his memories. And the love of his life, the girl next door, commits suicide after he tries to give her a pep talk.
That's when he puts together that his life and that of the girl has been rahter rough.
When they were young, the father of the girl next door sexually abused them both, while the girl's older brother watches.
Then as teenagers they witness a prank attempt to blow up a mailbox kill a woman and her infant, which drives one of his friends crazy.
Then, the girl's older brother kills the main character's dog while everyone else watches. This drives the crazy one ven furhter over the edge.
So, he discovers that he can use his journals to change the past. He tries to save everyone from this horrible childhood, but each attempt goes slightly wrong, until the Hollywood mostly happy ending.
I'd rate it around three out of five stars. Not the best movie ever, but entertaining enough to be a recomendation for anyone that wants to see a story this dark.
