Hey, let's talk old. Let's talk pre-Clan invasion days.
I had a weakness for a slow, stodgy 80 tonner with an insane weapon system. You were garaunteed to either fry your opponent or yourself in jig time, but Gods above, how your enemies hated to see you come up on their screens at a few hundred meters. You know, you love it, it's the aptly named Awesome. 3 PPC's were an unholy can of whoop ass and if you did, as I once did, and rip out those three PPC's and chuck in a boat load of small lasers and few extra heat sinks, you suddenly had the nastiest ambush mech on the block.
We used to hide the "Proud Mary" in a pond or under the snow or such like and lure in the opposition while the nasty bugger was laying dogo and then pop her up in the midst of the opposition; who soon found that all those small lasers combined were unholy effective at making even a Warhammer into a garbage heap in short order and the small lasers were easier to replace when ol' Mary got her tin ass shot up. She was a real one trick pony, but a fun one and she had a thirty seven mission career, about triple the length of the average mech in our game, even if she did go through six pilots.
Heh! Fun times man.

Pre-Invasion times I would happily run around in my Dire Wolf racking up Jade Falcon. Those were the good old days ;D
Inner Sphere-wise, I've always been partial to the Archer. The real man's BattleMech. Of course, Alpha Strike once or twice and you'll split your 'Mech in two.
And then there's the Atlas. Who can deny it? Stand there, point, shoot, blam. No more enemy mech. Absolutely magical. It sucks compared to a modern Dire Wolf (Daishi) or Warhawk (Masakari), however.

My old GM had a band of mercs that were a mix of Iner-sphere/Clan, I had a 100 tom mech that incorperated this fact. It even had jumpjets, Very uncommon for a 100 tonner. Imagine the surprize on your opponent face when you suddenly leap up, over, and behind him/her and frag them from the rear. I had missle packs and a rail gun plus a small IR cannon.

Quake in fear as the Dire Wolf lurches forward in the air at 10 kph.

My all-time favorites were the GOL-1H and GOL-3M (post-Invasion, I know) Goliath assault 'Mechs, with the Hatchetman and Firestarter designs a close second and third. As long as at least three of the four legs were intact, you couldn't knock a GOL off its feet.

The number one reason jump-jets on assault mechs aren't that bad an idea. Ever pulled off "death from above" with an Atlas? ;D

Battlemaster has been a favorite for long time, followed by the Shadowhawk.

Battlemasters and Wolverines were always my favorite, pre-clan.
As for having ever done a Death from Above with a modified Atlas... Yeah, actually crushed a Locust completely... I know, overkill, but he was pissing me off...

I had that once. Turned around and punted him one. Went flying, he did.

I had that once. Turned around and punted him one. Went flying, he did. Serves him right for getting too close. However, I have to admit that there is a great deal of satisfaction in bringing down a big bruiser like that with a little light 'mech. I used to award my Mechwarrior players with extra AP when they did that, especially if it was a torso critical caused by a plinker weapon like an AC/2, a machine gun, or a single SRM round.
