NNets are the "brains" of practically all Heavy Gears and Striders, advanced computers that have, on occasion, achieved a limited form of sentience and self-awareness, especially in older machines. While they are nowhere near the level of human intellect (at best the equal of a dog in the oldest machines), self-aware NNets do tend to have noticeable personality quirks, even if trnasferred from one Gear to another.
Below is one such NNet (others are coming). Beyond Gear model, personality, and history, stats are not given because their Gear "bodies" are stock machines.
Gramps
Model Type: Mad Dog R
History: "Gramps" is an old Mad Dog that was given a new lease on life during the War of the Alliance, when Terra Nova was invaded by the Colonial Earth Forces. Northern Forces were so starved for equipment in the early cycles of the campaign than even obsolete "retired" machines were pressed back into service, even if they had to be scavenged from junkyards.
In order to free up more modern equipment for frontline service, a great number of the old Mad Dog Gears were reintroduced into the militias of the North's Western Frontier Protectorate and the rear-guard units of the Northern Guard.
Gramps was one such Gear. Unlike others, he was a functional museum showpiece and relatively well cared for in that respect. However, his frame was far from suitable for active duty and so he was withheld until components became available for the "R" upgrade (parts from destroyed Bear Gears).
Gramps was assigned to a squadron of "white-haired demons", retired Gear pilots who were past their prime, but requested the honor of defending their home. He saw only minor action, but that was enough to force a change in his "personality" after the war was over and the Treaty of Westphalia, wherein Earth surrendered and left Terra Nova, was signed.
It became apparent to his pilot and support crew that he was not ready to be returned to the life of a museum showpiece. After some instances where the Gear actually damaged his display stall (punched big dents in it) it was decided to sell him off and replace him with a more agreeable display.
Gramps was eventually sold to one of the private security forces of one of the major WFP clans and assigned to one of their properties bordering the Badlands. He was since given to his current owner as reward for ten years of loyal service to the clan.
Personality: Gramps got his nickname due to his advanced age as an NNet. He was originally manufactured in the late TN 1500s as a part of the first run of Mad Dogs. His official service logs show that, in his original form, he served for about 100 cycles and saw regular action against Badlands Rovers and occasionally Southern Republic troops before being purchased by a military museum.
It seems that reactivation into full service stirred something in the old NNet. No one can be quite sure why, but he doesn't seem to be happy unless he is actually doing something and has a tendency to get fidgety if idle for too long. For the most part, this is not problematic, as his current pilot has found ways to make him useful even outside normal patrol duties.
