Depends on the era I guess.
However the ones that invaded Britain didn't use spears.
they had javalins which were thrown before combat was joined
and short swords which were used to stab out from the cover of a tight shield wall.
The Romans could easily move arround with their shields. One of their best tactics the wedge formation relied upon the shield walls strength as they rolled forwards, through and quite often over the enemy.
I wonder if your thinking of the Greek's Phalanx formation.

Challenger I must be mistaking then; as I have already told you, I am not much of an expert in ancient history and ancient fighting styles...

The half dragon casts Bull's Strength on himself and then prepares to cast Magic Missile in attempt to distract the "almost dead" assailants if not make them finally fall. Aracaneye, please specify how do you distribute your Magic Missiles among the “almost dead” guards, i.e. how many Magic Missiles (you totally create five Magic Missiles, unless I’m mistaking) each of the “almost dead” guards is getting?

(OOC: 3 to the one fighting Feinon, one each to the ones facing me. If I can't tell which one is Feinon, I guess I'll take a gamble...) I am getting ahead, but Feinon’s opponent is going to be dealt with by the time Alessandro will start casting Magic Missiles. Choose a different target, Arcaneye (of course, unless you want to cast some of your Magic Missiles into a fallen beheaded body, just in case). By the way, all the four other “almost dead” guards will be still standing (and walking) by the time Arcaneye will start casting his Magic Missiles.

(OOC: Alright, I'll focus three missiles on one of the warriors coming my way, and the other two and the other.) Acknowledged. I’ll update the game as soon as I can.

Alright, I’ll proceed to update the game situation now. If any of the players are online now, please wait until I’ll finish posting, alright?

Exile, please post what you will be doing now, i.e. will you follow Feinon (although just as everybody else, you will have serious troubles keeping up with him, as he is currently moving twice as fast as you possibly can), or will you stay with Challenger?

Challenger, please don’t post anything for now. I would like to wait for Arcaneye and Exile to post what they will be doing.

He's going to be pissed about it but he won't leave Fenrion to his fate.
Mind if I post that I'm going after him?

Let's wait for Exile to post her next actions before going farther, okay?

Keep in mind that Arcaneye still didn’t confirm his readiness to move, and he won’t follow the rest of the heroes until he posts so. Right now, Arcaneye AKA Alessandro silently stands beside Challenger and the rest of the heroes.

By the way, people, please keep in mind, that in my chainmail I my walking speed is just 20 feet, and I can run at 80 feet speed for just a short period of time.
