Soldier character build
On both sides of the mason-dixon lines you have men dedicated to fighting and dieing for their country. These brave souls are often at the forefront of when the wierd stuff happens, and often are the first called in to see what they can do.
While military training began as simply a couple of hours of marching and shooting, ever since Gettysburg, both the union and the confederacy have been both increasing their armies and the ranks of professional soldiers have swelled. Both have implemented reforms that wouldn't happen in our own timeline until much later, creating true professionals of war. Combined with the facts that actuall fighting is kept down (save for election years), gives plenty of time to train the troops right. Afterall, recruits aren't as easy to come by as they used to.
Variant Abilities:
Fearless: After a while in war, you either go crazy or you get tough. Instead of getting the Greased Lightning bonus to gunslingers, the soldier gets a bonus to save against fear. This bonus is the same as the bonus you'd normally get for Greased Lightning.
Tactical aid: Instead of Deadeye, one get's this advantage instead. The soldier can use an attack action can provide tactical aid to one single ally (but not himself) provided they are located within sight and voice range of the mercenary's position.
+1 competence bonus to strike
+1 to A.C.
+2 to skill.
+1 Initiative
If the Soldier so desires, he can take one full round round and he can give one of these bonus to all of his/her ally's, including self.
At 14th Level, the soldier can instead give two of the abilities to the person and/or a group using a stand attack action and full melee action respectively.
Prefered Skills:
speedloading, riding, spot, search, and wilderness survival are often common skills gained either in training or in the field.
Equipment:
Soldiers in the field are commonly issued the following: a uniform, Rubberized or painted poncho, A rifle (most commonly a Springfield.58 for the union or Enfield musket for the confederates), a box of 50 bullets, a Bayonet to fit rifle, a Scabbard for Springfield or frog & scabbard to fit Enfield, a Canteen, Black tarred haversack w/inner bag, Tin Cup, plate & period utensils, Grey, brown or white wool blanket, and a Shelter half (tent).
Soldier that have "retired" or who have gone AWOL often replace the uniform with civie's and the rifle with one with a better ammo capacity or range.
