True, grease and web are far more effective. However the principle is the same. Limit the mobility of your opponent in any way possible. Caltrops do exactly the same thing if used properly. And they were easily available in both editions. A mantrap pole arm also could do the same thing to anything medium sized, a weapon I noticed went bye bye in 3e. The other thing you're ignoring is, that anything the players can do, the creatures can do too. Imagine Kobolds armed with tanglefoot bags. Suddenly the cannonfodder becomes a very serious challenge even to a mid level party. Sure, you can give 2e orcs character classes and all that. Certainly. But, I'm lazy. I'd rather not go through all the effort of figuring out how much a 2e orc with 4 levels of fighter is worth in xp. Too much of a pain in the butt. Being able to simply arm the bad guys and having the bad guys as MUCH tougher to begin with is much more fun.

Well, back to the spirit of this thread, and really, this isn't horribly munchkiny, but if you're a lawful neutral druid, throw in a level of monk. Wisdom bonus to AC regardless of your form, flurry of blows, boost to all saves... it's a pretty sweet deal

Just to toss on my munchkin hat for a second, what are some cool things you've done with your character's concepts (feats and such) to boost your effectiveness? I'm gonna play the resident buzzkill for a second. A good 3E player doesn't need to be a munchkin to come up with really cool ideas to boost his or her effectiveness. The right combo of skills and feats can serve most characters well, as long as the player knows how to use them, and isn't afraid to get a bit creative. having said that... the Psion. Versatile to the max, nasty powers (Dissolving Touch, anyone?) and a few really good feats which beef it up a bit. Need a few extra power points? Grab a feat. No armour or magical items? Snag Inertial Armour Feat. Always on. Need a few extra 0 level powers at 1st level? Grab a feat. Can only use simple weapons and no armour? No prob! Turn your hands into claws, your mouth into big jaws, kick up the armour with a psionic boost, and you're ready to go! Get tagged by that poison or stray arrow? Psion, heal thyself! Need to get out of a jam quick..you've got the power! The psion is great b/c as long as you have the power points, a well-played psion can kick some serious butt!

Actually, you're right SSD. I'm calling it being a munchkin and that's not necessarily true. Using good tactics is hardly being a munchkin. Let me rephrase that to read: Let me put on my thinking cap and ask you what you can do to your character to make him or her more effective in a given situation. That better?

Oh hardly the same tactics. One it takes the ability to cast spells to use the Grease or Web spells. To use the Tanglefoot Bag it takes a character who has an arm free to throw the damned things and a few coins in his pouch. The two do NOT equate. Draxy Drax, you're talking mechanics, not tactics. the tactic is to hinder opponent's movement. it's still the same. for the composite bow thingy (3.5E) - add super-high str (by items or whatever) and the sure strike ability to the bow, specialization and whatnot, and you just might deal REALLY nasty damage to that distance. use manyshot with elemental (frost, flame, corrosive or screaming) bow. of course, a couple ranger levels help in this (specialization and species enemy damage are no longer precision-based, and apply to all shots to any range). and if any of you dogs try this in my game, there's an improved sunder coming right atcha. Oh, and the bow has 2½ times the normal range increment, not 3 times (not that it changes things much). A thrown weapon would have 3x range increment.

Something else to remember is for the finger wigglers to USE THOSE FEATS! Wizzies get scribe scroll for free. Write down all those nifty but limited use spells onto a scroll or three and stow them in your pack. Realistically, you aren't going to need Arcane Lock all that often, but it can be a real lifesaver when used.
Fighting a big, bad nasty and have to run away because you can't kill it or have just been very badly mauled? Scoot through a door and arcane lock it. You just bumped the break DC by a whole bunch and upped the hardness. If it's a decent door, you've bought yourself several rounds at least. Heal up, get prepped, open the door and nail the target. Close the door again immedietly afterward. The spell stays. Very nifty little ambush tactic.
Use Brew Potion. Use it and use it often. The greatest thing your spell casters can do is give out potions. Think about it, a Shield potion lasts for 10 rounds minimum and depending on edition gives either a +7 or +4 bump to AC that stacks with pretty much everything. That's a pretty good trick for a handful of gold per shot. The problem with buff spells is you generally have to cast them one at a time. Potions let you get off multiple spells at the same time. Instead of having to memorize those buffs, you just distribute the potions and go to town. Chug down that potion of haste followed by that potion of shield and you're pretty much unhittable in 3.0. Protection spells also work great here. How often are you going to memorize enough Protection from Elements spells for the entire party? Rarely unless you have forewarning about a particular danger. Far simpler and more effective to make the potions and spread them around. Poof. One round and everyone is no longer taking damage from that acid pouring into the room from the trap you just tripped.
