Yep. Cross-country skiing. Where are the rules for that? I remember something about skiing in 2E, but can't find even that. If you find the reference, p-lease post it here.
thanks folks!

You might want to try D20 modern or spycraft. They might have what you are looking for. I don't have those books, so I'm not sure.

thanks for the suggestion. Didn't find them in the core books though.
I'm considering making the rules myself...
Cross-country skiing shouldn't be a separate skill - it's too narrow. I figure using normal speed in snowy conditions and perhaps a +10' to speed on ice. It doesn't sound much, but skiing (even in a slow pace - that's jogging speed) is good cardio excercise, and much harder than actual jogging. So basically you can use skis to move your normal speed on snow, without (nearly) any risk for slipping on ice.
Downhill might be something like balance check (dc 15 for 2x speed, 25 for 3x speed and so on) for turning and control. Even a slow pace should require DC 5 (or 10) balance. Ask any beginner.

Will certainly agree with the DC's for downhill. I would say that downhill is trained only skill. Trying to downhill ski with no training is just cruising for a bruising. Heh. Been there, done that.
Could this be part of a wilderness lore check? I'm trying to think of an appropriate skill, but I'm having trouble. I can see what you're saying though about it being too narrow for a separate skill, but I'm not sure if it fits with anything else. Maybe balance, but even that doesn't fit very well. I suppose it could come out of character background. A character with wilderness lore from a mountainous area knows how to ski (possibly) but someone from the desert doesn't.
Just a thought.
One question though. I have no idea about the history of skiing, so, how anachronistic is this?

Just found this at the WOTC site: Sports (Con) You are trained in a team sport such as basketball, football, or hockey; an individual sport such as cross-country skiing or hurdles; or a competitive physical art such as ballroom dancing or figure skating. Sports is actually a number of separate skills. For instance, you could have the skill Sports (soccer). Your ranks in that skill don't affect any checks you happen to make for basketball or figure skating, for example. You could have several Sports skills, each with its own ranks, each purchased as a separate skill. Corporate sponsorship gives a +2 circumstance bonus to Sports checks. Retry: Retries are allowed, but they don't negate previous failures, and the task becomes more difficult either because the opposition is more aware of your tactics or the judges were unimpressed. (Increase the check DC by +2 for each previous failure.) Here: www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/dx20020401cIt's part of their April Fools stuff. Also of interest might be: memento-mori.com/games/d20/Tundra.pdf Which has rules for using balance to use skis. The Balance skill can also be used to travel on skis at normal speeds across tracklessdesert terrain (snow). The Run and Endurance feats may allow for faster or longertravel. Depending on the grade, a character can travel up to 60f in one round by using afull-movement action. When moving at full speed, the character may utilize featssuch as Ride-By Attack, Spirited Charge, Shot on the Run, Spring Attack and mobility.

good points. Run (for cross country speed) and Endurance should figure in. Also, Wilderness Lore (that's Survival for you 3.5E freaks like me) should be the skill, perhaps with synergies from Balance. After all, the skill pretty much covers overland movement.
