Hello and welcome to "Taming the Horde" my very first online rpg as DM. I have been a player and DM for quite a number of years and have played most of the older games out there. This will be a fantasy adventure set in the style of AD&D second edition. It really doesn't matter because it will be freeform and diceless for the most part.
The setting is my 20 year old gaming world of Aarplace, dumb name, I didn't come up with it but it stuck. Aarplace if full of all the things you expect from a fantasy world Dragons, dwarves, and elves. You will notice I capitalized Dragons, just as a game note, my dragons are considerably tougher than the book version. I don't intend to throw one at you in this so don't worry.
Magic is fairly common, you can't buy it in a store most places but it is around. It is populated by most races you know and some that are unique to the setting. The portion of the world you will be adventuring in is fairly calm with several kings who don't seem to want what the other has so war is usually by invasion and the kings tend to aid each other.
You will begin in a small village called Streamside, mostly farmers, a few craftsmen and a mix of races which is fairly common. You are 7-8 miles from a place known as the Crossroads which is nothing more than a large Tavern/Inn/Stable at the meeting point of two major roads. One road leads to the Magical (to you) City of Dwarfguard, the other to the not as magical but still important Central City.
Characters, I want nice shiny new 1-3 level characters. I prefer to run low level games with new characters as I get to have as say as DM in what the powers and abilities a character posses. Also I get to see the kiddies grow up to be great warriors and archmages <sniff>.
Here's the reason I said "mostly diceless" above. I want you to draw up your character. Race, class, Stats, Skills. This will give me a better idea of what each character can do. If the overweight cleric with a 8 dex tries to back flip over his enemy, I want the stats, so I can tell you why he fell on his face.
Races, try to stick to the "standard races" or variations of these. If you have a question post on this thread and I will answer.
Class, pretty much the same as race I will accept Kits for classes but you are going to have to explain the bonuses and drawbacks to me as I only have 2nd ED fighter guide to draw on. Please to not send me info on a kit that is all benefit and no drawbacks. It needs to be balanced.
Stats, 1-18, no exceeding 18 except for % on strength. It's not that I don't think characters can't exceed these, but boosting them is something I like to hand out for goodies. So stick to standard to start.
Skills, I need these badly, they really round out the character. I prefer the 2nd ed system as I have never looked at the 3rd. I had a friend explain it to me a little. You can draw your character up that way but I will probably disallow some stuff so don't complain if I do. I'm warning you ahead of time.
Equipment, you don't have much. No heavy armour. Lets put ring mail at the top of the list or hide if your class would wear that. You may have 2 weapons, a shield (wood or hide). and the stuff in your pouches.
Candles, tinderbox, whetstone, a comb, stuff like that. Everyone can have some coin, no more than 10sp.
Quick note on money, I almost forgot that I changed this years ago. 10cp=1sp, 10sp=1gp, 10gp=1pp, 100pp=1 mithril piece. This is easier to keep track of. Don't worry about the Mithril you won't see any for a while.
Mow here's the cool part. You all get an Heirloom. This is something that grandpa or dad or your crazy cousin Hilda handed down to you. You decide what you want, a sword, a bow, a wand, cloak, boots, toothpick, whatever. I will tell you what it does. if you can't decide
let me know and I will award something. Or if you just wanna be surprized let me know. This is to make sure you are not completely helpless out there will all the restrictions I set. And it's fun.
Background: I will give you some, you fill in the blanks. I consider this the most important thing about your character so please take some time with it.
You are young for your race (humans will be 16-20) and a member of this village or the surrounding forest. (I will include Crossroads in this area) You are all FRIENDS, to start with anyway, (it makes it easier on me) and talk of having grand adventures some day.
Now you tell me the rest, none of you has been farther than Crossroads except for any rangers or hunters and then your trips have been entirely wilderness.
I will post the game thread when we have enough players. I will be updating the game thread daily once we get started. Please try to post frequently, I will move the game along without your input if I have to, would rather not. I am looking for about 4 players or more.
Have fun!
