So, can it be assumed that I had made those pearls of power prior to entering the mansion? or should they wait? If yes, then I'd like to spend 200gp to get Ghoul Touch (2nd level spell), if no, then... I'll spend 300gp on Vampiric Touch, 200gp on Ghoul Touch, 300gp on Dispel Magic, a wand of enlarge person (750gp), and save the rest (2700gp) for working on magic items.

It can be assumed that you bought/made/stole whatever you wish before you entered the mansion. In particular you, since you've never adventured before, can take whatever you can afford. You are not under any time constraints.
Everyone else can have whatever could be made/bought within the six weeks between returning to Mithril and entering the Mansion. In other words, time is not a factor here.

Looking at my sheet made me realise that Palai doesn't have a backpack, so rather than continue to stretch believability by having him carry everything in his pockets, I'll scratch 2 gp off my sheet to buy one.
Also, how much XP did we get for that last session? The rewad thread hasn't been updated.

You didn't get any xp for the last session. I'll do up the xp when you complete the mansion. Makes things easier for me.

After the game today, I was thinking about the little discussion we had about blink and magic missile. Now, Cos was correct, magic missile is a force effect and can strike ethereal creatures. That is correct. However, there is one part that he missed when quoting that rule:
So, a blinking wizard is only visible 50% of the time. Since magic missile is an instant effect, a caster cannot "hold the charge" like you can with some other spells, notably cause wounds spells. So, for the caster of the magic missile, there is a 50% chance that when he completes his spell, there is no target and the spell is wasted. If the caster could see invisible, then Blink would have no effect on Magic Missile. However, Apoctus, unless I'm mistaken, cannot see invisible. Therefore, his Magic Missile spells had a 50% chance of failure.
So, when I said that the spell failed after casting, that should have been the end of Apoctus' turn. He should not have then been able to move and cast lightning. He tried to cast magic missile. That was his turn. When I moved initiative forward, that means that a character's turn is finished unless I say otherwise.
This is why I forbade rules discussions during combat. I expressly said that unless a character was about to die, rules discussions were to be taken up after combat finished, or better yet, taken up here.
Since that didn't seem to do the trick, I am instituting a new rule. Anyone can question rulings at any time. However, if a ruling is questioned during combat, and the DM (me) is found to be correct, then the questioner will immedietely lose 1000xp. Outside of combat, there is no penalty for wrongly questioning a ruling. In combat, you had better be VERY sure of what you are saying.
Guys, I'm reasonable. When I don't know something, I'll ask. Look at the transcripts from today's game, you'll see a few examples, namely Spell Resistance and Dispel Magic, where I wasn't sure of the rules and I asked. However, when I do make a ruling, I'm 99% of the time pretty sure of what I'm talking about. Trust your DM. Heh.

I'm pretty sure i'm still right, but that's how i would have ruled it if i where DMing. and about the lightning, i thought you ment that i knew my magic missile wouldn't do anything and decided to do something else, but i did find another thing about that, when blinking, you only take half damage from area spells. And also, while no chararcter was in danger of dieing, i didn't see you checking to see if blink affected Padwin's attacks, like in the spell discription, you might have been seceretly, if so, ignore this bit.

Well, considering Padwin only hit once, Evelyn and, to be fair, I didn't check the miss chance but for 4 damage it wasn't really an issue. Also, as a blinking creature, I only have a 20 % miss chance as stated in the spell.
How you rule spells when you DM is up to you. The rules clearly state that MM requires a visible target. Blink renders you invisible 50% of the time therefore there's a 50% failure chance with Magic Missile.
And, I'll quote directly from the PHB:
While you can strick ethereal creatures, you could not target invisible creatures, your magic missile had a 50% chance of failure.
I specifically said that I knew what I was talking about and you still argued. Fair enough. You can do so. But, if you're wrong, you lose 1000 xp.

I assume it is okay to ask a question or make a comment in whisper (as long as it is not disruptive to the game)?
Please advise.
Thanks,

Heh, of course. OOC stuff is fine, although I would like to keep them to whispers. It makes the transcripts so much better afterwards and it keeps everyone in character.
I have absolutely no problems with questions. If you don't know something, by all means, ask. I will do the same. What I don't want is multiple posts back and forth arguing a relatively minor point (sorry Cos, but it was pretty minor considering the damage that Ev and Palai put out) that is not likely going to affect the outcome of a combat.
Outside of combat I'm willing to argue all day long with no problems whatsoever. It's during combat that it's annoying. I lose my train of thought when I have to argue something and try to keep track of fifteen other things at the same time. That's what I'm trying to do away with.
But, yes, whispers and ooc comments are ok, if kept to a minimum. If you truly feel the need, insult eachother in character. My hope is to see a transcript that is almost entirely in character.

Oh crap, forgot to add something. You spellcasters out there. Yup, I'm talking to you. Update your spells to 3.5 please. Take the time and get it done. To aid you in your work, go to this site and you can simply cut and paste into the macros as needed: srd.pbemnexus.com/home.htmlGo to the spells section and it's got everything you need. Kelly, I know as a cleric, your spell list is CONSIDERABLY longer than everyone else's, so I'll cut you some slack. You wizzie types, get it done. Or I'll have to crack the whip again. Heh. BTW, thanks for the site Cos, that's a great find.

I made Apoctus using 3.5 rules since I don't have access to 3.0 rules here, so all my spells are 3.5, well, except for those spells which I got from TaB, like repair minor damage and lesser acid orb.

Cool Beans! That's good.
Oh, btw, I was checking the SSS site for some updates and I came across some FAQ's regarding one of the spells I gave to Turjan. Fire Missile or something like that? It is now limited to a max of 5 missiles, not unlimited as stated in the original description. Doesn't change anything until you guys get over 9th level.

Ya... i was wondering about that... wouldn't that have made an epic wizard nearly unstoppable with one spell?

hello, just posting for no reason and I have no questions really. I did update my spells and make sure I was on 3.5. I jsut remember abotu 2 months ago we had some trouble with the haste spell affecting only 1 person. I thought there was a mass haste spell at level 6 or something so assumed haste only affected one target. Honestly I think haste affecting multiple targets is a little too powerful. Turjan

Well, it's still better than before. Allowing wizzies two spells/round was insane. This spell only gives you extra attacks if you use full attack, which means that you can't really move (other than a 5 foot step) and, the ac bonus can be countered pretty easily. Actually, the Blink spell he had up countered haste because it denies a Dex bonus. Not too out of line.
Heck, before, you could make a full move and still make a full attack. That was nuts.
But, I do see what you mean by it affecting so many targets. It does make it a pretty useful spell. If it only affected one target, I'm not sure how often it would be used. The effects aren't that great, compared to other third level spells. IMO, it's pretty balanced. Certainly a heck of a lot better than the 3.0 version.
