Hi Agamoto,
Hey, I wish that I could disagree with that last statement too. Sincerely.

Drax,
Fair enough. Whether life is ended by an asteroid, ice age or our own stupidity, the arguement remains the same. If we have a self sufficient colony somewhere else, then it becomes that much more difficult to whipe ourselves out.

Oh hey, I agree with your arguement. You might have noticed that in that post I also said that I hope my children, or their's or at the latest, theirs, are off of "our dear mudball" by then and living "out there" somewhere.
I just differ as to why I want that.
I don't give a fig about the race of man as a whole, but rather about my little contribution to it and their progeny, when that occurs. I really think that if we as a race are going to do ourselves in, then we will find a way to do it even with colonies out there. I just don't think that with the current balkanized governments that life on Earth will be worth living when there are fifteen billion of us. I want my kids, or grand kids or greats and all that follow to have some hope of a decent quality of life, because I'm a selfish bugger that can't get worked up over the abstraction of humanity as a whole.

Have to agree on that one. Sooner or later, we're going to run in to problems that can only be solved by being very far away. I just don't see any chance of governments trying to get people up there any time soon. Come to think, that doesn't really exclude private endeavor. If we got a fund together, maybe we could raise a few bilion... I have been planning to found a colony on Mars for years to get away from all the dumb people (once I become a billionaire, of course ).
