Confishis? Is that some sort of Little Mermaid philosophy? *whisper, whisper, whisper* Oh, you mean Confucius, the Chinese philosopher. Heh. I was picturing some fish with sunglasses on trying to sell previously owned watches.

This will sound weird or stupid (I may be both and will admit to weird quite readily, but try to deny claims of my stupidity):
Isn't everyone in some way, shape or form a philosopher by at least one of the definitions given above?

Yes, people will talk about the more well know philosiphers because their thoughts are available to the masses.

Lao Tsu and I don't know if Nostradamus was a philosopher but I find him fascinating just the same.

Nostradamus was a seer, not sure if he was ever called a philosopher. But he was an interesting chap.

I left one out of my original list:
Spider Jerusalem (fictional character from Warren Ellis's Transmetropolitan comic book)
Hmm... between Spider, Jubal, and Diogenes it looks like my list has an unusual tendency towards misanthropes (AKA grumps).

When asked what kind of wine was his favorite, Diogenes said, "That which is paid for by others."
That's basically one of my operating philosophies in life. Enjoy free stuff.

Does Jesus qualify as a philosopher, since his teachings were supposed to come from divine revelation and not through reason?
I would hold some thought-provoking novelists, such as Gore Vidal and Umberto Eco, among my favourite philosophers. A good philsopher sows philosophy into the minds of those they contact.

Does Jesus qualify as a philosopher, since his teachings were supposed to come from divine revelation and not through reason? Yes, of course! Ideas don't have to come from reason to be philosophies. Most religions can be considered philosophies depending on your point of view. A philosophy is simply a set of beliefs, whether they're logical or religious or inspired by the ravings of a madman.
