I don't know if anyone here cares or not, but today (17 Dec 2003) is the 100th aniversary of the Wright brothers' historic first powered flight in a heavier-than-air machine, ushering in the age of flight. The other BBSs I visit don't seem to give a rats ass about this historic aniversary, but maybe you will.
I'm having a toast to the Wrights and all the other aviation pioneers before and after them that made the dream of controlled human flight a reality and you're all welcome to join me.

Cool. One invention which has changed the world a great deal.
Here's a question, what invention from the last say, 300 years, has changed the world the most?

The gun. Specifically with regards to refined gunpowder and the flintlock rifle.

Heh, guys, I did say 300 years. Both fire and gunpowder have been around considerably longer than that. Although gunpowder has certainly come into its own in the past three centuries.
My personal take on this: refrigeration. Without refrigeration, our society would collapse. We would not be able to sustain half the popultion of the planet without refrigeration. No computers, no preserving food on massive scales, no air conditioning, the list goes on and on.

I just saw a movie about that a little while ago, Hussar. Forget the name... Mosquito Coast? Something like that... about an inventor (Harrison Ford) who takes his family to Africa and keeps spouting how ice is civilization.

In order:
Refrigeration. Enables us to do a heck of a lot.
Telephone: Much easier to keep in touch with our loved ones around the world.
Internet: Even easier to keep in touch, and most info is just a keyboard stroke away!
Planes/trains/and automobiles: Does this need an explanation...? Making travel easier on us all.

Can't really say what the GREATEST invention is since there are so many with such a profound impact, but here's some of the biggies: Reliable Steam Power and it's subsequent derivatives (Internal Combustion Engine, etc.): the very realization of this technology sparked the Industrial Revolution, which in turn lead directly to the world we have today. Electricity and Running Water: Not just nice to have, they may be the reason you survived to adulthood. They allow a new level of health, security, and comfort. These are the technologies I'd miss the most if the whole mess comes crashing down. [r]Refrigeration[/b]: Already been well covered, so I'll say no more... Radio, Telephone/telegraph, and Computers & the Internet: the greatest revolutions in information distribution since the printing press. It'll be really hard for opressors to lock up free information now that this pandora's box is open! Planes, Trains, & Automobiles...and self-powered ships: As said before, these made it possible to reach any spot on the entire face of the earth in less than 24 hours. Amazing... Space Travel: It's not just for picking rocks from Uranus. Satellites have given us communications and weather-warning unparallelled in history. Plus the multitudes of derivative technology that came as a direct result: computers, metalurgy, plastics, etc.
