Eh, I don't know if we'd be better off without them, but we certainly could benefit from being able to think through them.

Agreed. Emotions can either empower us to higher ends or bog us down (e.g. these pedophiles). Controlling and harnessing them is a noble venture in and of itself.

Controling and eliminating them is better.

What do we gain by eliminating them? We only lose a part of ourselves. We lose a vital element that allows us to experience the world in ways that lesser beings can't experience. Besides, controlling emotions is a measure of the spirit. Destroying them acheives nothing other than creating a robot.

Think about it for a second... what would we have left if we eliminated all emotions (assuming it's even possible). Emotions are indirectly responsible for every single thing we do. The desire to be content (an emotion) is the main driving force for humans and all creatures. Get rid of emotions and you now have no reason for things like computer games, music, amusement parks, television... basically anything meant to entertain us because the whole point of entertainment is to make us happy (or scared, or amused). Imagine if you could never be happy again. You wouldn't be sad, but you still wouldn't be happy. What sort of an existence is that? What would be the purpose for anything? Even the desire for knowledge that fules the unemotional art of science is an emotion. Most research scientists enjoy discovering the previosly unknown, and would probably not have pursued that career path if not for the high they get after discovering something.
Everything we do is because of emotion. It may not make sense, but even the desire to make sense comes from an emotion! Without emotions we'd just be robots without a rhyme or reason to do anything and we'd probably just sit here until we die, feeling nothing at all.
