When did otaku get hooked to anime? An otaku, in Japanese, simply means a fanatic. You can be a karaoke otaku, a purikura otaku (people who lived in Japan know what that is), or (at least in my prefecture) an udon otaku, etc. America is the first place I've seen where 'otaku' instantly means anime. Any thoughts?

prolly a cultural thing. ppl want to associate a traditional Japanese word with what is a huge Japanese import into the states, most not knowing that the word has a much broader connotation in Japan.

Stateside, it's just an alternative to "fanboy" with regards to anime and manga.

As somebody that has worked in the anime industry I can tell you that it is a term currently used in a negative way in Japan for DIRTY FANBOYS. In the states we use it for all fans and to tell the truth that has scared more than one of my Japanese anime artist friends! ;D USA! USA! USA! USA! We rock! We're soooo messed up!

Messed up doesn't begin to describe us! We took a lot of Japanes stuff and tore it to shreds. I know. i study Japan and Japanese. I plan to move there! Look at FF7 for instance. Japan = Claude, Bullet, Aerith, and Tifany. America = Cloud, Barret, Aeris, and Tifa! I could make an endless list. However, for there side of the argument, they do the same. Look at GI Joe...guess what? it was an old school anime!! Which brings up another topic. Anime, the name in general. Most Americans, unlike myself, pronounce it An- im-ay when in actuallity it is pronounced as Ah- nee-may!

This is not to mention even simple things. Remember toad from SMB2? He's actually kinopio. Every single pokemon except for pikachu has a different name. That's a LOT of pokemon. A lot of names and jokes from anime, nintendo games, etc. can't be understood outside of Japanese because of its little subtleties. When I moved to Japan, I didn't know that anime freaks were called otaku - I only learned that otaku was a fanatic. When I found this out, I thought that it was pretty degrading.

but you forgot a very important thing abot smb2 and pokemon. Pokemon is originally called Pocket Monster Trainer, as most know. So why is it we can hardly hear it pronounced right (poe-kay-mon) it's either pokeemanor pokeemon or suttin. It nerves me!! Another thing is about Wart. That is because Nario was not in Doki Doki Panic!! it was simply 'child-ized' to better market it by adding the SMB characters.

from my undertanding befor looking at your posts I thought that Otaku ment the most degrading thing you sould call a fanboy. (much like calling some one who plays D&D a stupid geek with no social skills and low popularity and a whimp)
I have seen Otaku no Video and there are many differant Otaku. POrn Otaku, Tv Otaku, airsoft, war, anime, and so on.... the thing is, all these people did not want to sho their face, I though an Otaku is something to be ashamed of. as for dirty fanboy I think that is "Hentai" some people might think it means sex or porn but the corrct term I belive is Ecchi (hope I spelled that right VincentSantion.
rent Otaku no video.

Own the book. No need to rent it. and if what you were asking the spelling of to be correct was 'Ecchi' than yes. It is the written form of the letter 'H' which stands for 'hentai'. Damn! I really AM a geek.

Doki Doki Panic was a game made by japan and not doing anything involving Mario. We changed the characters and name to better market it to Nintendo's current child group. all set now, chiffer.
