In the 80s some people in the music industry complained that home taping was killing the music industry. Nowadays it's free downloading from peer to peer sources like Morpheus and Lime Wire that they complain about.
You know what's really doing it both then and now?
Crap music and high prices.
$15 is close to the minimum price for a new CD at a major chain store. Now why would I spend that on anything but the absolute best in music? That's three McDonalds meals or five comics or one RPG sourcebook. Heck, for that much money, I could see a movie in the evening at the over-priced first-run cinema twice.

A CD is cheaper to make than a cassette with the same songs, yet we pay $5-$6 more for a CD.
And did you know that you pay a sort of "potential copyright infringement" tax on every blank cassette tape you buy (and probably on CDs, too, but I don't know for sure about that)? This extra cost goes to the music companies to "repay" them for any piracy that you may or may not use the tape for. It's almost to the point where it's cheaper to buy a pre-recorded cassette and tape whatever you wanted to record over that.

Here in Denver a man wrote a column in the newspaper. One thing he said struck me a funny.
"It's bad when you look at the grammy's and don't know who most of the people are that are getting awards. And I'm part of the music industry."

I brought up the subjects of downloading and crap music, but didn't really adress them.
Let us suppose that I'm slightly interested in a band like NOFX and download a couple of their songs from a peer to peer source. Now, let us suppose that I like them well enough that the next time I'm in a greedy corporate chain music store, I buy one of their CDs. Did I really steal anything by downloading those songs?
Now let us suppose that I like Metallica. I have quite a few of their albums and like them all. Now let's suppose that I buy their latest St. Anger without doing any real previewing. If I'm disapointed with the album, aren't I the one that got robbed?
Some groups and artists, in fact many, I would not download even one of their songs because they're not worth having even for free. Oddly enough, these groups manage to do well enough without my support.

I'll give you an article later. But the complaint, from what I heard, isn't that you download a few songs. It's when that's all you you to get the songs, instead of buying them.
