This is a made up question to find out what you would do.
You have just found out that you are a distant relative of adoft Hitler. You can collect one million in royalites from the book Mein Kaft. But in order to collect the money you must make a public acknowledged that you are related to Hitler.
The question is, "would you take the money?"

No. Reasons are obvious.

Interesting question. I personally would have no problem with having a relation to Hitler in that despite what he may have done, he is not me, and I don't think that the blood of a single sociopath has any effect on me personally. However, the mere fact that many people wouldn't understand this line of reasoning and would probably attempt to wreak "retribution" is enough to deter me. A million dollars or not, its not worth living a life being constantly hounded and threatened.

True. But then, I just saw an interview with Himler's grandson and there have been no problems with him. And Musselini's granddaughter is running for election in Italy. I don't think people would care too much about Hitler's son or grandson. Take the money and then change your name. Too easy.

I would take the money, but for reasons that I hope are obvious I wouldn't feel good about spending any of it. I'd probably donate it to a synagogue or some other charity. Every last penny.

Easy to say, but push come to shove, the real question is would you?
Even I don't know if I would... the lure of money is hard to resist.

But in order to collect the money you must make a public acknowledged that you are related to Hitler. The question is, "would you take the money?" Damn skippy I would. Blood is blood, and there's no denying that. What my forefathers did, or did not do, has absolutely zero relevance to the flesh and bone that makes up this cat. And if you're gonna hold somebody accountable for their ancestor's crimes and moral wrongdoings, then you got some serious issues man...for no matter who you are, you will be linked to an evil individual. And if you're going to start throwing stones, then you better aim one at your own skull... (And YES, I am aware that this is in fact what's going on in my homeland of Canada with the native peoples and their claim to land, that, somehow, I have to pay for the scam my forefather might have been a part of, but that don't make it right. In fact, it's wrong. But 'nuff 'bout that...)

The problem is, they'll be hunting you regardless of what you say, if they even have some reason tos trong suspect you're related to Hitler.
And why not? Hitler was a horrible man, and if he had any influence on you, you very possibly could be a similarly horrible man.

The lure of money is difficult to resist indeed.
You'd be surprised - money has corrupted people to become just as bad as Hitler, with no sociopathic tendacies required.

I'd probably blow it all in the celebration that I got a million dolars... I don't think it could corrupt me in one night ;D

That's a doozy.
I don't want to work for a living, so free money is tempting. On the other hand, I want to go into politics and being Hitler's third cousin twice removed would be very bad publicity.
I think, ultimately I would take it, but I would try to make it clear how distant the relationship is and how anti-Nazi I am.
That and I have no idea where this relationship with the Feuhrer would come from. I'm basically English, Irish, Russian, Lithuanian, and Native American (Potawotami).

I'd take the money. And the repercussions could be bad indeed. I'm from Denmark - one of the lucky countries Hitler occupied back then. Yup, some people would accuse me of being as bad as Hitler but then I can sue them for defamation of character. That'd teach them. Of course that wouldn't make me anymore popular, but I truly don't care. Money is money Behold the Mistress of the Obvious, and if the money is mine I see no reason to let go of my rightful inheritance.

I don't hurt for money right now. And I might be strange, but I don't care if I have a lot or not. My parents say I'm "tight" with my money, but the truth is I just don't see much to spend it on. I'm not a very materialistic person. I think I'd be happy in a one bedroom apartment my whole life (assuming I didn't have a husband or kids). I don't need a big house or an expensive car or brand name clothing. As long as I can feed myself and have a decent computer (which isn't hard to afford with my wages and my chosen cost-of-living), I'm fine. I don't need that million. I'd only claim it so it wouldn't sit there gathering dust (or be used by somebody "less deserving"). To charity it goes. Seriously. If I won the lottery or something then sure, I'd take the cash. But this is cash I didn't have before, so why do I need it? Maybe if I was starving I'd take it, but if I still don't have money issues when this hypothetical issue is brought to my attention, then I ain't keeping it.
And Mathias, do you really think a million dollars will set you for life? Do you live in the US? Because if so, it certainly won't. You'd be surprised how fast you can spend a million dollars if you live in the US. Most people would end up buying a nice house and a nice car, and then you're pretty much left with pocket change. If you lived like a college student, then maybe you could eke out an existence on a million dollars for a decade or so. Anyone who lives in the US and thinks they can stop working for a living when they get a million dollars dumped in their lap is kidding themselves. Especially if they're under 30.
