We've Moved!Shadowdragon has graciously allowed us to move our worthless selves over to his new site. The advantage is that we no longer have to worry about those annoying language filters and a much sweeter Php. Take a look at our new home at: The All New and Improved Shadows of the Dragon ForumPlease make all new posts over there.

So how is the move being handled
is Shadowdragon moving entire forum sections or is it a start from scratch thing?

I think that would be the least painful way of doing things. For forums like this one, simply make new threads on the new site. When people stop posting on this forum for a set amount of time (say six months) my advice would be to delete the forum.
Then again, I've always advocated deleting dead forums. If there have been no new posts on a forum for six months, that means that there is little or no interest in that forum. Why waste the bandwidth and server space on something that no one reads and no one posts on?
In my mind, what will happen is that eventually, new posts will only occur on those games that choose to remain on this site. As those games eventually close down, the site will grind down. However, there's no need to move games to the new site, although, IMO, forums need to be set up on the new site ASAP to accomodate those who do want to move.
Freeform games should not be started on this site. I think that we really need a bit of a kick to get people over to the other site and get it moving. Right now it's kind of empty over there and we could use the warm bodies.

I would like to note, Hussar, that it will be simply impossible for me to move my “Oerth and Beyond” online campaign into the new forum (and I’d choose against it even IF it was possible), and since I expect it to continue for a long time (unless all the players will suddenly lose interest, that’s it), I expect the old forum to continue running for quite some time… As about people needing “a kick in a butt”, I’ll just openly post what I stated before… Don’t forget, that some people may not be especially happy about getting “a kick in a butt”, your humble Black Robed servant among them. The new forum brings some improvements, but whether to move or stay here (or post on both forums, as I am going to do), should be each individual Shadow Warrior’s decision. If you can’t make Shadow Warriors to move to the new forum without applying restrictive measures (like enforcing NO NEW GAMES ON THE OLD FORUM policy), then perhaps, you should reconsider making them to move at all? Some people doubtless get used to the old forum, and they won’t likely take kindly being forced to move to the new one. To make a long story short, I am TOTALLY against applying any restrictive measures to the old forum, since I intend for it to be a primary for me (I’ll spend time on the new forum mostly when I’ll have nothing to do on an old one). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, moving or not moving should be each individual Shadow Warrior’s decision!

I am Keeping Forgotten Warriors here. It seems to fit better. More modern games can be play on the new site. That's my thinking on the moving here and there.

BRO, I perfectly understand what you're saying. Your Oerth game has more posts than most of the other forums combined. Moving it is simply not feasable. Fair enough.
However, most of the other games are under 1000 posts and could be moved to the new site in an hour or so. Not a huge amount of work. Particularly our two or three newest games (my own included) which are easily portable. No one is being forced to move their games over to the new site.
However, chat forums like the Den should be moved across. There's no reason not to. Threads on this forum come and go as issues are discussed, then new issues brought up. There's no reason to split the userbase between two sites.
Personally, I see no problems with restricting new games to the new site. It affects current games in no way. Current games can continue as they have been. However, new games should be created on the new board. The upshot of this will eventually mean that this board will die. That's a simple truth. Without new games, this site is living on borrowed time.
I guess the question really needs to be asked.
Do people want to move to the new site?

I guess the question really needs to be asked. Do people want to move to the new site? A good question, Hussar... And my answer would be both "yes" and "no". I'll explain... I am intrigued by some of the possibilities opened by the new forum, most notably by possiblitiy of playing and/or DMing more "mature" online RPGs (I was close to crossing the line in this regard at a certain part of my "Oerth and Beyond" online campaign), but at the same time, I don't wish to see this forum, where I spent more then a year, closed (and "NO NEW GAMES" policy will be just a slow death to this forum, as you mentioned yourself). I'd perfer if both old and new forum were running without any restrictions; let Shadow Warriors make their choice rather then enforce it upon them! But... If the choices were limited to "Either the old forum continues running, or we move to the new forum and the old one closes sooner or later", I'd choose the old forum without thinking: I've spent too much time in here, and I actually went as far as to consider it my "online home"; needless to say, I'd hate to see the old forum closed, no matter what improvements the old forum will bring.

I guess I just don't understand why people want to stay here. Our goal is to move everybody over to the new site. It will be the same group of people and the same set of boards (mostly). It will essentially be the same forum just with a different face.
Whatever makes this site "home" will be over in the new forum, unless you particularly liked the look, the constraining nature of Proboards, or a particular set of threads. There are tons of skins on the new board, all of which look much better than this, so looks shouldn't be a problem. I doubt anybody likes Proboards looking over our shoulder and telling us exactly what we can and can't do, so that's not a problem. And if you like a particular thread you can just move it over or finish it up eventually (like the games). The only reason I could think of for wanting to stay here is that you've set up a game and don't want to move it. That's understandable, and is why this forum's staying open. Everything else, though, is moving, probably including what makes this "home."

Well, people go when and if they want to i guess. Cant MAKE them go.... Glad to hear that you seem share my point of view, ElrosTarMinitarsus, there is no use of trying to force Shadow Warriors to move to the new forum against their will. Let both old and new forum to run together for now, and then… Whatever will be will be.
