NFS: U is the latest NFS coming November 2003. This time, the game is no longer dedicated to fast exotics, but to more everyday cars. You might think, what's so much fun in driving a car you can buy on every corner for a couple of bucks? Well, the most fun part of NFS: U is the customization feature. You will be able to customize about everything on a car, from bumper, spoiler to turbo and even paintjobs with exotic drawings on the site of the cars. Engine upgrades, turbo's and exhaust systems will improve your performance, while bumpers, spoilers, paintjobs and rims will enhance the look of your car.
Millions of combinations are possible and lots of real-life parts, from well-known manufacturers, will be available for each car. Among the cars are Asian cars like the Toyota Supra and Nissan Skyline, European cars like the Volkswagen Golf and Peugeot 206 and American cars like the Dodge Neon and Ford Focus.
Every car has a price tag and so does every upgrade. So where to get the money? From the races off course! As in the real life "underground", you will be able to challenge other people, either offline against computers or split screen, or online against friends or just the first victim who thinks he (or she off course) can beat you in a head-to-head race. You can race against 3 opponents at the same time, all for the money to improve your car and thus improve your status.
The tracks come in different variations, with one distinctive mark: they all take place at night and in the city. This is to emphasize the "underground" feeling in the game. Among the tracks are long straits, to drag race, point-to-point tracks with twisty curves and shortcuts and normal tracks where you race several (often quite short) laps.
From all the screenshots and movies we've seen so far, the graphics look very promising and might take this genre of games to a new level. Detailed cars, stunning effects and detailed surroundings will definitely enhance the whole experience.
The most important thing of this game, or any game, is the game play. The PC version of NFS6 (Hot Pursuit 2) had quite poor game play and EA has promised to do better, so expectations are high. From what I've heard from people who already played early versions of Underground, they were more than satisfied with the game play. The sense of speed is enormous and the controls are very good. These ingredients will make the game very exciting and fun to play (and keep on playing).
The online part of the game (in the PC and PS2 versions of the game) will be important: you will be able to race the cars you built yourself against other people online. It doesn't matter if the other person has a PS2 or a PC; you will be able to play against them, which is quite unique.
Overall, this game is going to score. Although not everyone will like the setting of this game, the Fast and Furious hype that is still going on will guarantee that EA has a bestseller on their hands with Underground. I know that, but they know that as well. EA is trying to bring NFS back to the top, where it slipped away with NFS6 (well, except for the PS2 version, which was excellent). EA also has already confirmed that there will be an NFS8, where exotics will make their comeback, and almost certainly also NFS9, which might become Underground 2.
NFS: Underground will be released somewhere at the end of November 2003 and so far it looks like they're gonna make it. The demo will be release shortly (October 27th to be exact), so be sure to check back here regularly for more updates!
