okay, this isnt a versus thread. ive been shot in the arse over those far too often to get those going. but having run and played d20 ever since they glutted the market back in 2000, ive seen all these games retool their games for the d20 system and find myself wanting to strangle the people at WotC.
Not because d20 sucks, far from it. It has become exactly what WotC wanted it to be. Industry standard and one other game companies can use to springboard themselves from unknown to mediocre.... (or beter in some cases)
But after all is said and done, how many have played and run with the d20 version of their favorite games and then tossed it all out the window so they can go back to the original version? Deadlands has been like that for me, ive found that i just cant stand the leveled system and that the class set-up too restrictive to how we used to play DL. Not to mention combat has gone from grim and gritty to a dice and numbers game.
So, gimme them poker chips and a deck of cards. Anyone else feel like this?

I really prefer the classic Deadlands system, I espessially like the hit locations and the dice for ablities, but I'm also a fan of d20, so I'll play most d20 games, but I would much prefer classic DL to d20.

The failure of a D20 system is that it really doesn't suit a Grim and Gritty sort of setting. It's just far too random, which, in the end, means that everything levels out to mediocre.

I've played both games, and kinda feel an apple's and oranges feel to the rules based on each system.
I'll toss my rant up later today on both systems and their merits and flaws.

I have to say d20 doesnt work well for Deadlands. I prefer teh old fashioned deck of cards and poker chips. Plus that method fit the theme of DL; men in saloons played with cards, not dice. The old method was, in my opinion, more themed and was fine how it was.
