"Nice work, I can see you're going to be just fine here!" She smiled, as he once again showed his Japanese speech, which seemed to impress her.
"Ohh, Naoko makes the best Ramen I have ever tasted, she's a real miracle worker!" She laughed at herself and blushed slightly. "My appartment usually has the odd take-away box from here,....*She looks dreamily into space*.....I just can't help but love her cooking."

Nick chuckes, 'We'll I know it'll be the best I've ever tasted. Not just because it'll be the first, but I'm pretty sure I can trust you when it comes to this. Considering the junk I used to eat when I was a boy in England, I think that japanses cuisine agrees with me rather well generally. Hm...' he looks distant for a second, 'if only my parents could see me now...' and snaps back immediately, 'But never mind that. So you rely on these guys for food? You don't cook yourself at all?'

"Well I can't really cook that good,....I'm better at making sweets and rather simple foods, plus,....*Akiko looked thoughfully*.....I'm too busy to cook a fancy meal for myself, plus I enjoy Naoko's company here,....we're like sisters practically!"
She noticed Nick pausing slightly when mentioning his parents.
"Are you alright?" She softly aksed. "I don't want to pry ya know but,....you seem to be distant when mentioning your parents then."
She looked silly for a moment and pulled a face as though disgusted with her question.
"Gyah,...just kick me if I'm intruding, you don't have to say anything,....now where's that grub?!"
She didn't want to intrude into his life but, she was just worried about the way he was distant when talking about his parents.

'Nah, you might as well know...' Nick seems slightly relieved at getting something off his chest that he was brooding on, at any rate,'you've probably heard how I became the laughing stock of the british journalistic profession with my failed expose on a corporation called Umbrella. My dad was a scientist working there, a biologist in fact. He was an idealist, working to better the human condition. But he was too devoted to his work, and mom left him. He didn't even pay much attention to the divorce, he dropped hints that he was onto something big, some sort of dirty secret. He committed suicide a few weeks later. Many blamed the divorce, but I knew better, so I tried to uncover the truth. I knew something was up, but didn't know what, and had no proof, so I became seen as a conspiracy theorist, a sensationalist who justed wanted to stir up trouble. Nobody would hire me. That's partly the reason I'm here.'

Akiko didn't know how to react,....she smiled softly and sympathetically as though trying to make up for his loss and troubles,...she knew it wouldn't do much good but she did so nevertheless.
"Sorry to hear that Nick,....Umbrella seems to be holding all the cards nowadays,.....I understand you all to well,....they've hurt me before!" She trailed off staring outwards into the open space ahead,.....she would not cry, holding back the tears she bit her lip inwardly to stop herself from doing so.
Smiling back at him she said:
"Well,...I'll try and make your stay here as nice as possible,....how's that sound for you huh?!...I know I can't do much to comfort you but, I know what you've gone through,.....two peas in a pod ey?!" She said before lighting up a cigarette, her hand shaking a bit.

Nick's eyebrow raised. This was something he'd never expected. Despite his curiosity, he decided not to ask fro details. He didn't want to offend or cause her pain. Whatever it was it must be bad to cause her to display such grief. Maybe it was worse than his story Instead he put his hand on hers., 'That's...I mean...I never thought...If it's naylike like hwat happened to me...well then... I'm sorry.'

Akiko was shocked slightly as she felt Nick hold her hand,.....
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't cause you to worry,.....it's.....out of my control I guess, I just wish,.........." She looked rather angry at the conversation and with herself oddly.
"I'm sorry Nick,......I shouldn't make you worry huh! My situation is like yours but,......it can be reversed I hope......." She looked distant again for a moment,...whatever it was that Umbrella was doing to cause her grief, she wasn't going to tell him yet........she snapped back into reality and smiled at Nick before saying;
"Well,....atleast you know you're not alone anymore,......I hope you'll enjoy your stay here aswell as your work with me?!"

Nick withdrew his hand, now aware that he had gotten carried away and that in general, public displays of emotion were frowned upon in this country. 'Of course I'll stay and work here. I'm been trying to put it behind me. It was a bit of a shock to hear that they've touched you also, I guess no matter how far I run, it's never safe. Lets drop the subject and carry on with our meal. I'm sorry I went and spoiled things like this.'

Akiko smiled and nodded to Nick.
"I guess,......Umbrella has it's claws in everywhere,........................" She puased for quite a while seeming quite disturbed,.....
What could have caused her so much grief?
"Yes, let's continue with our meal,...and you haven't spoiled anything, I guess you would have said about your family sooner or later in another conversation,...and I would have given the same reply." She reasured him.

Naoko walked through the kitchen door and into the main area where Akiko and Nick were waiting for their meal. "Gohandesuyo!" Naoko said and managed to turn Akiko's head in her direction,.....the drooling expression evident on Akiko's face. She placed a tray infront of both Akiko and Nick: "Hai, meshiagare!" She said and then returned to her kitchen.

"Eat, eat! She gestured to Nick with a happy smile on her face,...she quickly took a mouthful of the delicious food and looked very satisfied.
She then realised how silly she must look and after finishing her mouthful she laughed nervously at herself and said: "Guess, I get carried away huh,.....it's one of my only luxuries here,....plus she's my favourite cook."

Nick licked his lips and smiled after helping himself to a equally large, if not larger helping of food. 'Mm...delicious!' he winked, 'No need to be self-conscious, you in the company of a barbarian!'

Akiko laughed outloud at Nick's remark, and took another bite of her food,...after finishing her mouthful she said:
"So,...how's about tomorrow I come by your place in the morning, we'll go and get some quick home essentials and I'll show you around the City,...and then we'll go to my office,.....*Akiko nervously laughed at herself*.....it's not much and you'll be working there mostly, as I'm more field-work, and I'll be using my laptop on the sites anyway, sending you the data direct if need be."
"I spent my grant money on the new technology for the actual publishing of the paper and for my field-work,.......I wasn't given much anyway but I'm glad I managed to get the computer for you and my laptop, or else there would be no paper to publish!" She reasured, before taking another mouthful.

'That sounds good,' replied Nick, 'After the meal I should probably get some rest since I could never really get the hang of sleeping on a plane.'

Akiko warmly smiled and replied:
"That's quite fine,....*She nervously laughed at herself*.....I have some paperwork to finish anyway, on the contract with the new office area,...otherwise it could be taken back from us.
Taking another mouthful she finished and then continued:
"I'll come round to your place at about 10 o'clock then, that ok? I understand you fully,...jet-lag and sleeping on plane is not good for a person,....so I hope you'll get some good rest!"
