I was wondering if anyone has any children who have SED (Serious Emotional Disturbance), or know of anyone who has a child that suffers from this. My son has been "diagnosed" with this from his school, and I don't know much information on it. Any websites or books anyone may know of and can give me information on, I would greatly appreciate it.

Your a dear and thank you........right now he's grounded to his room for some crap he's been pulling at school, but the thing is, I don't know if I'm helping him or making him feel worse for not doing what he KNOWS he is supposed to do. He's gotta learn sooner or later that no one is going to be there for him in his adult life to go behind him and make sure he has everything he needs, or he is doing what he is supposed to do, or is staying on task.........................

Ok, this is personal opinion, but I kinda feel that schools are too quick to label a child bipolar, ADD, ADHD, etc when they start to act up. I don't remember the age of your kids, but have the hormones started kicking in because they're going into the teens?
My son became a terror once puberty started, and the best thing I did was sign him up for the anger management class at his school. He was able to talk with kids his own age, and work out solutions to problems between them and the school counselor.
He's doing lots better now....more willing to compromise instead of get angry.

That's a good idea LWW, I'll have to see if his school has anything like that. It's not that he has behaviour problems, but he has ALWAYS been slower than the other kids, and can't stay on task, can't stay organized, etc. etc. etc. I know when he was in fifth grade, they said he had this also. He definatley has some problems there, but through all the years he's been in therapy and on medication, nothing has worked for him, so I pulled him off the meds. Couldn't see any reason for keeping him on them if they didn't do anything.

Probably a combination of meds plus teaching him basic organizational skills would have helped allieviate the problems somewhat. But that's where the parents, the school counselor, and the teachers have to all work together, so things will be consistent for the child, and confusion will be avoided.
Usually, and depending on the child's problems, the meds mighty eventually be lightened or stopped altogether. Once he learns the skills, and sees that he does have some sort of control over himself.....the confidence builds.

I'm not a child psychologist, but could I suggest martial arts? It teaches discipline, builds confidence, and stabilizes the emotions. Martial arts has helped out problem kids in the past, from gangbangers to the mentally handicapped, etc. Just a suggestion.

I've thought about that in the past. He has expressed an interest in karate, but for whatever reason I never looked into it. Probably because in the past he has done sports and never kept an interest in it, so it just ended up being a waste of money.......

Amen to this comment. Too often schools are labeling the kids with these problems and suggesting medicinal alterations so they don't have to deal with it, when in reality it isn't anything more then adolescence... both my parents are teachers and see this all the time.
