Whether it was someone you personally knew, know or know about, is there someone who had a profound influence on you.....made you strive to be "more".
After reading the books of James Herriot I entered college so hoping to become a veterinarian. Due to lack of finances, and chemistry (organic and inorganic) leaving me totally clueless......I knew that my love for animals wasn't enough to get me through my ideals.
So while I couldn't become the clone of my hero, it hasn't stopped me from taking in stray cats, dogs.....heck, even a baby squirrel or bunny....and helping the creatures of the animal kingdom in some way, shape or form.

As corny as it sounds, my hero is my father. He is a teacher who has been in the same school for 31 years (Which this is his last as he retires in June) and has effected the lives of many people in a positive way. For 29 of those years he worked as an Applied Technology teacher (wood shop, metals, computer drafting, etc.) and has never once regretted it. For the other two years, which were actually in the middle of his time, he was the Dean of Students (and was later moved back down to a teacher after getting all the schools computers up, running and all the hard files in and order... and then they told him he wasn't happy with being the dean, which was news to him, but that is a whole other story...). I know that he touched a lot of peoples lives, along with his three children because I used to meet his former students all the time when I still lived in Chicago. If we went out anywhere nearby the area he taught (and by near I mean within an hour drive) we would end up running into one of his former students that still remembered him. It was amazing how many people would come up to him, remember him just to say thank you for helping them out. It didn't matter what we were doing we would always run into someone that knew him. It is an amazing thing when someone comes up to you and asks if "this guy" is your dad and then proceeds to tell you about how he was always willing to stay after to help any of his students not only with the projects in his class, but with work from other subjects as well. One of the people was a police officer in my home town and I used to talk to him when I worked for the park district. It was amazing how much my dad had affected his life and helped him out when others had written him off...
Like I said, I know it may sound corny, but it is true.
