I've been playing around with creating my own campaign world for a while now. I have the 3 core rule books (for 3.0e), Manual of the Planes, and Dieties and Demigods. The last two have helped me think about my pantheon and the structure of my universe. Any other books out there you think might be helpful to a world-builder? I saw Ghostwalk at the bookstore and leafed through it briefly and it looks interesting as an alternative to simply having players with dead characters roll up new ones. I'm looking for things like that which could add flavor to my campaign or my world. So, anyone have any books they would recommend? Has anyone read Ghostwalk or used it in a campaign?

regarding ghostwalk, i have and have used that book IMC. never run it as its own setting, preferring to incorporate it into my own world.
there used to be world builder's guidebook for AD&D (that's 2AE for you folks...), but thats obviously out of print now.
when it comes to world building, some of the best things to do is basically purchase either some Gazeteers or the main book for some campaign settings, or borrow from a friend who has them and either use/cannibalize items and things you like in the setting itsef or swee how they went about building their world and "reverse engineer" it.
in general, the majority of my campaigns take place on homebrew worlds, and each one always has elements of the previous world. either because no one explored that area during the last campaign or because im constantly evolving the concepts and ideas im using. (not that im ever going to try publishing a setting, there's just no bloody point far as i can tell, because unless its a big name campaign, it gets ignored and dies a horrible, painful death)

My main ideas for campaign worlds come from actual literature. Since i prefer a more heavily evil campaign, I use ideas from novels like Dracula. Sometimes when you read or watch TV, an idea just hits you, so go with whatever you like. As for the books... it really depends on your world and campaign. The Complete Warrior book has information in the back regarding warrior heavy/magic free worlds. For an evil world or area, look at the book of vile darkness for ideas.
