Hi all,
EK, actually even the Hindaic equality is often a sham. In many layers of Hindaic thought the women is a simple means to an end, a useful fiction is that she has equality, but a close study of the situation shows differently.
For instance, in classical Tantric practices the woman is ONLY present to act as a sexual diomorph... the man is using her energies to empower his own to work towards his putatative enlightenment.
Too, while a son can turn down an arranged marriage proposal of his parents with very little outside pressure or stigma, a young woman in the same situation becomes greatly stigmatized. The fiction is maintainable mainly in that a woman can own land as easily as a man can, but she can not utilize that ownership as easily either if she decides to have it, say, farmed. By cultural usage a man will oversee the active working of the land; so while a man can both own the land and oversee it's use, a woman effectively cannot.
Still, the classical Hindaic culture is probably the largest culture in the world to have offered women ongoing "near parity" in social matters for the longest period. I just include this to offer a more histographicly accurate statement.

Islamic practices also empowered women for several centuries in a time when women were seen as property. Certain Middle Eastern countries notwithstanding, the Qu'ran certainly preaches greater empowerment for women.

Yea - the only reason why women have been treated unequally in those cultures is because men are stronger than women, and thus have an innate psychology to dominate and lead; to be the head of the pack, so to speak. In Hinduism, 2 of the 3 main gods are actually half-man, half-woman - they have merged so well with their spouses that they are one. The 3rd rules equally with his wife, in order to show the balanced duality of man.
When Islamic people pray in mosque, it is considered proper for the men to pray in front of the women. Why? So that the men aren't tempted if its the other way around! Interesting factoid, but I think it illustrates my point effectively.
