RMW, I have a question to ask and please don't get offended. Have your kids been tested for dislexea? Yes I know a spelled the word wrong but I can't seem to spell it so let try this the word is pronoucs like this DIS- LEX-EE- A(SHORT A SOUND) I have it and hears whats like: Can't seem to spell very well I mix up certin letters when i see them at times like; B and D, P and Q, L and I, and a couplr others but it is a little more random. I mix up numbers alot so I really suck at math( I have to use grid paper to do any sort of math) I can't see a lot of optical illusions, it's very hard to fool my brain in that way. i can't read out loud very well but i do read to my self very well, but some people have a harder time reading so they just don't do it I have a short anttetion span. It should be a minute for every year you are minis less then half of that unless its a book or something I really enjoy.
The reason why i'm asking and giveing you some of my systoms is alot of the its not ADD or ADHD it just a very fixable learning disabuiaty. And there are ways to over come them. If Albert Enstine can be them then any one who wants to can. If you need any help or advice just PM me and I will help any way I can

Sharess, I have thought about dsylexia(sp?) and even went as far as to ask the school to test him for it when they did all his other testing last year. They said he wasn't showing signs of that but I know he does have to use graph paper when he does math because he cannot line the numbers up evenly and work the problem on regular notebook paper. He needs the squares to put each number in. He also reads better quietly to himself than outloud. He doesn't write any of his numbers or letters backwards, but alot of times when he spells words he gets his ion's backwards. For example, he will spell a word like opinion.....opinoin and soil..........siol. He does several letter combinations like that. I bought this book onetime and it was called "Smart But Feeling Dumb" and I thought is was an excellent book. It listed in there that there were many forms of dsylexia and alot of times it was hidden, like you didn't see any outwards signs of it by writing letters or numbers backwards. I told everyone about that book but no one would listen to me and told me he was just ADD. I took him to his psychiartrist last week and he told me now that my son is getting older he is also starting to show signs of a mood disorder. I know I am just tired of taking my son to doctors and no one can tell me what the problem is and in the meantime it is getting worse. He just had his meds switched again. He is no longer on Adderall but is now taking Stratara. They keep switching his meds but getting no results. I feel like I am fighting a losing battle and in the meantime my son is the one suffering for it. It came out last year in his tests that he is average to above average student, but his fine motor skills are on the same level as a six year old. In this book I bought, the one I referred to above, it stated that alot of kids actually do have forms of dsylexia but are misdiagnosed for learning disablilites such as ADD. Thank you for bringing this up to me. I think maybe it's time I took the bull by the horns and tell them I don't care what they think, I want him tested for it. Oh, and btw hun, I wasn't offended by your question. I have always been open to other opinions especially if it means it will help my son.

I'm glad that I didn't offend RMW, I think what may help is seeing some one that specializes in dsylexia or other leaning disablitys. My mom took me to some proffser in Rockford ILL. and the test took about 3 hours but it really help my mom. I had a thrid grade teacher that was a little less then kind to say the least. She had told my mom that I was very dumb and didn't know my multplation tables and other thing . Mom took me to see this proffser and in about two weeks we had an appoiment and like I said the test took three hours but my mom found out that I was infasct a very intellant child (which was a bit of a pain in the butt later on in life) also she knew what tpyes of dsylexia I had. The only problem is that evey two years I have to get retested to see if I get better or stay about the same. I was told it was part of some sort of study. If that is ture or not I really don't care becaues when I feel like the dumbest person I just look at the test results and end up feeling a lot better. I hope that getting your kids tested helps but maybe just taking him off of the drugges would help too. but then amybe not. I'm one that really doesn't like to see kids druged unless it helps with seazures.

I think alot of kids are labeled dumb when they're not. I know my son has been labeled that but then he baffles his teachers because when his report cards come out he's making good grades, and they can't seem to think of how he is taking the information in, and then he gets labeled as "audio sensory" or something like that. Meaning he listens and takes it in even though it looks like he's not paying attention. I don't like my son on meds either but we've tried school without them and it was disastrous!

Oh and btw, I'm glad that you got answers to your problems. I am glad it made you feel better to know that it was at least something. I know if I had an answer to my sons problems I think I could see the light at the end of the tunnel but as of yet I am still in darkness.

Hmm, I was talking with my wife tonight and explaining about why I like coming to this site. I told her about this thread and she asked a pretty simple question that I can't answer. What causes ADD/ADHD? I honestly don't know.

I really wished I knew Hussar, maybe if anyone knew our children wouldn't be on all these meds for it.

Hmm, I was talking with my wife tonight and explaining about why I like coming to this site. I told her about this thread and she asked a pretty simple question that I can't answer. What causes ADD/ADHD? I honestly don't know. As it was explained to me by the doctors that told me I had it, It is a chemical imbalance between your brain's abillity to focus and abillity to go off on a wild tangent. Or better yet, your brain not being able to differentiate what you have to do as apposed to what you want to do. The ADD type seem to drift of into their own world when faced with things they don't want to do (me). The ADHD sorta do the same thing, in their minds they are in another place, but their bodies act out what they are thinking (a friend of mine was famous for trying to go home all the time to play with his toys). There is more to it, but I can't remember the rest. That and who said the doctors know what they are talking about.

But what causes the chemical imbalance?

Same thing that causes every chemical imbalance- nobody has a friggin' clue, really. Maybe it's a product of you eating peaches exactly 3 days old when you were pregnant. Maybe it's genetic. Maybe it's God. Who knows?

Which was why I started this thread.............genetics, environmental (like eating the peaches that were three days old) or a combination of both?
