It's a great setting. Lots of historical and cultural detail to go alongside the giant robots.

Some Background information for a largely NPC group I had worked up.
Unit Affiliation: Roving Guns Heavy Gear Regiment Type: General Purpose Gear Squadron Gear Model(s): Hunter-class Heavy Gear Commanding Officer: Ranger Allison Pryde Squadron Members: Snr. Cpl. Timothy Hayden, Cpl. Rik Deacon, Cpl. Hikaru Ichijoe, Cpl. Edith Dowers
Character Notes: Allison Pryde: Allison is a Norlight soldier from Yele. She joined the Northern Guard to chase after an old high-school boyfriend, but instead found herself becoming a competent commander and talented Heavy Gear pilot. Pryde is a level-headed individual with an eye for tactics. She impressed her instructors with the ability to think on her feet, using some creative tactics to overcome opponents. Not one to separate herself from her troops off-duty, she can often be found socializing with them. In fact, she encourages weekly get-togethers, if time permits. Allison was raised a Sorrento Revisionist, but has since leaned more towards Massadan religious doctrine, much to the consternation of her bond-twin Geraldine Sansa, a Grizzly pilot who serves in a different Northern Guard unit, the prestigious 74th Heavy Gear Regiment “Nova Redriders”.
This squadron is Pryde’s first command. She’s been given a group of pilots fresh out of training to hone into a professional unit. The talent and the intelligence are there, but there’s still much to learn. Pryde’s experience in combat stems from several border skirmishes with MILICIA units as well as renegade Earther and GREL bands. Pryde’s unit has received their first assignment.
Timothy Hayden: Hayden is from Marathon, “The City That Thinks For Itself”. Hayden actually likes being away from the completely computerized city. Off-duty, he spends much of his time reading books and writing in his journals, eschewing data terminals and computers in favor of good, old-fashioned bound books, paper, and pens. His family finds his preferences odd, but endearing and they appreciate every hand-written letter he sends. Hayden hangs out with the Westerner, Rik Deacon, and Hikaru. Tim teases Hikaru about being a country bumpkin because he’s from Baton Rouge, but he’s actually glad there’s somebody from home in the unit. Hayden also gives Rik a little ribbing about being from the WFP.
Hayden has just been promoted to Senior Corporal and is only now settling into his role as Ranger Pryde’s right-hand man.
Hikaru Ichijoe: A farm kid from Baton Rouge in the UMF, Hikaru’s father and mother raised dairy cattle. Most of his family and friends have elected to carry on that life, but not Hikaru. He seeks a life of action and adventure and sees the Northern Guard as the key. Called “Hick” by Tim Hayden because of his naiveté and his country farm-boy manners, he nevertheless seeks to make his mark on the world. Hikaru puts up with the name-calling because he’s turned the insult into a point of pride. He’s never seen front-line combat, but Ranger Pryde has confidence in his abilities.
Hikaru is a talented marksman both in and out of his Gear, so much so that the Section commander has put in a request that his Gear’s light autocannon be replaced with a Riley R223 medium rifle.
Edith Dowers: Orphaned in the War of the Alliance, Edith grew up in a Revisionist orphanage in Kenema, NLC. When she left, she attended technical school to become a technician for Shaian Mechanics, but changed her mind midway through school and joined the Northern Guard. Edith admires the engineering of the Cheetah scout Gear and wants to try her hand at piloting one. She is qualified , but so far hasn’t had an opportunity.
Edith is the most soft-spoken member of the squadron and seems very uncomfortable in social situations. Still, she hangs out with the rest of the squadron because she doesn’t like being alone. She secretly likes Hikaru, however, and has been trying to work up the courage to ask him out.
NOTE: Rik Deacon was supposed to be a PC and wasn't initially detailed. He was later developed into a citizen of the Western Frontier Protectorate who was looking for his brother, supposedly taken by Sand Riders when Rik was young.

Don't mistake Gears for Mechs. Mechs are big, slow and plodding. Gears are much smaller and a helluva lot faster (not to mention flat out cooler). The HG universe is WAY larger and more complex than they depict in the TV series. What you see in the show is like a grain of sand taken off the beach. I don't even have all of the role-playing books and there's enough story material in what I do have to keep a GM busy for years.

i understand some of the world, and mechs i mean robots, no matter size. or speed. not as in mechwarroirs, and in the anime world they mean big robots, and Gears are still big. I used anime references.
Sorry for makeing you misunderstand me.
