Is the dead man's facial expression relevant? No.
Is the dead man's clothes relevant? No.
Is the dead man holding anything? No.
Is the dead man face down? Irrelevant.
Does the dead man have anything on his person that's relevant? No.
Was the dead man an artist? No.
Did the dead man live alone? ....No.
Did the dead man live in the country? No.
Did the dead man make the wood/sawdust as a gift for someone before it was destroyed? No.
Was the dead man engaged? No.
Don't be discouraged... you're getting closer... One of you will ask it and then you'll all go "Aahhh!"

Was the reason spiritual or religious?

(Not that wierd... this is realistic, remember, and it could actually happen. I guess this puzzle's harder than I thought. There's a certain question that you learn to ask right away for these puzzles when you do them often. I probably thought it was easy because I'm used to asking that question first thing. I'm trying to hint at you what it is, but I can't think of anything else to hint without giving it away. Don't give up! Keep going! Think wierd. Ask more questions about the man.)

I can't think up any more hints without actually asking the important question for you. You guys want me to give you the question, or are you done?

You got me. As you said, there are some techniques and questions to ask that would be common knowledge to someone who'd done this type of problem before, but I must confess ignorance in this aspect.

The question experienced folks learn to ask (though the wording may vary) is:
Is their anything physically wrong with the dead man (besides the fact that he's dead, of course). Yes.
This doesn't give away too much, but it should point you in the right direction. I think...

Was the wooden thing vital to the man's survival?
Was the wooden thing a tool that the man used?
Did the wooden thing have any relationship with the man's disability?
Was the man paralyzed?
